Earlier this year I started making a dining room chair for my oldest daughter. I finally finished it:
She wanted a “rocket chair”, so I got out the wood chisels. First time ever working with any significant amount of hardwood (in this case walnut), as well as the first time carving something substantial. For a guy that never took shop class in high school, I think it turned out pretty well.
It was also the first time I have used wipe-on-poly. Pretty neat stuff, but I think it took at least 6 coats. The chair definitely isn’t perfect, but I’m still reasonably pleased with how it turned out.

I went with kind of a generic rocket. I didn't want to get too crazy with the details, as up to that point I had never carved walnut like that.

Gorgeous! Love the color and the texture of the wood. Good work on the detailing, too.

Thanks! Coming from a shop teacher, that’s some praise! This one definitely isn’t perfect. And chances are, neither will the next one, but hey, I’m learning. One thing I really struggle with is getting things perfectly square. One thing I did better on this one is making sure all the joints were a nice tight fit. Everything was hand cut, and all the mortises were chopped with a chisel. Slowly getting there...

They’re never perfect, but only you will see the mistakes :)
Hand cut mortises are a crazy amount of work! Good job seeing that through to the end!

Well, I don't have a slot mortising machine, so it was either do it by hand or use a forstner bit. Other times I have used a forstner bit it gets a little uglier.
